Research shows that early-childhood education helps poor children succeed in school — but only if it is of high quality. ... Last month, the Department of Heath and Human Services proposed regulations that would require the bottom 25 percent of Head Start organizations — which can include nonprofits, municipalities and school districts — to reapply for grants. Tough benchmarks on management, health and safety and financial accountability will be imposed. Most welcome are plans to measure how well teachers interact with children, using a respected classroom assessment de...

Good teachers have always understood that students don’t learn in a vacuum: Kids can’t learn efficiently if they have to walk a gauntlet of gang thugs every day on the way to school, or if they suffer mental problems, or they were up half the night cowering from domestic violence. Now a growing amount of developmental research confirms that as many of half of all students become chronically disengaged, contributing to the high...
This year’s Virginia Film Festival will feature guest appearances by Guillermo del Toro (writer and director of “Pan’s Labyrinth”), actor-filmmaker Josh Radnor (known for his role as Ted on CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother”) and Vince Gilligan (creator of AMC’s critically acclaimed “Breaking Bad.”). ... Kielbasa noted that this year’s festival will not have a single theme, but will instead explore a number of themes and ideas. It will also emphasize contemporary films, with classic movies playing a smaller role than in years past.

A small scientific step was just made that could help the 21st century skills movement be a bit more grounded. I have criticized the movement in the past for, among other things, advocating the emphasis of certain skills without any clear plan for how those skills ought to be taught. For example, “collaboration” and “working effectively in groups” are often deemed 21st century skills. Advocates point out that more and more projects in the workplace are team...

We live in a time of rampant, mercurial self-portrayal. We can, if we wish, post, profile, tag, chat, friend, transform, lie, project, stalk, date, connect, complicate, simplify, vex, blog, tumble, and identify ourselves with dazzling velocity through a protean real-time landscape of social networks, ranging from the ubiquitous Facebook to virtual communities enmeshed by an interest in couch-surfing, opera, anime, and an array of signifying passions whose devotees, virtual and real, are forming and communing and falling ap...
... Agriculture is Virginia’s largest industry according to a 2008 economic impact study completed by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.
The industry has an economic impact of $55 billion annually and provides more than 357,000 jobs in the Commonwealth.
A national push on comparative effectiveness research is under way as a result of federal stimulus and health reform legislation. ...Americans have mixed feelings about comparative effectiveness research. Two studies from national opinion surveys by Alan S. Gerber of Yale University, Eric M. Patashnik of the University of Virginia, and colleagues find that people see the value of information generated by comparative effectiveness research, but fear that it may be used to ration care, or limit doctors’ ability to tailor their care. Although people want information to help them...
The Lexington/Rockbridge Health Department, Virginia Department of Health, is pleased to announce a new partnership with the University of Virginia Medical Center to provide maternity care for area clients. The Health Department and UVA will provide for prenatal, postpartum, and nurse office visits. Clients will deliver at the UVA Medical Center, but receive their care locally at the health department.
Education programs should more explicitly train teacher candidates in the rudiments of developmental science, and need policy support from states and the federal government to do so, asserts a report released this morning by a panel convened by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. “There’s just been an explosion of knowledge in development science over the last 10 to 14 years,” said Robert Pianta, dean of the Curry School of Education at the University of Virginia, in Charlottesville. “We know so much more about 4-year-olds’ capacity in mat...
