… Accidents jumped 43 percent at intersections with traffic cameras the last time Alexandria operated red-light cameras, between 1998 and 2005. That's according to data compiled by the Virginia Transportation Research Council, a joint venture between the Virginia Department of Transportation and the University of Virginia. Statewide, accidents serious enough to cause injuries increased 18 percent at red-light camera intersections.
University of Virginia Students are building a floating classroom at Virginia Beach. Ten students, two faculty members, some UVA alumni and consultants are working to complete what's called the "Learning Barge" in time for a September 14th launch date.
The increased risk of cancer in obese women appears to be reduced by weight-loss or "bariatric" surgery, according to a report in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. Severely "obese women are at incredible risk for multiple cancers, primarily breast and (uterus) cancer but also colorectal and other gynecologic cancers," Dr. Susan C. Modesitt from University of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville, told Reuters Health by email. "I hope that physicians begin to be proactive in evaluating these women for cancer promptly when indicated."

We should all be so fortunate to be remembered in the manner that Michael Colley was on Friday at John Paul Jones Arena. Family, friends and colleagues gathered near courtside, only a few paces from where Colley spent so much of his time, his office inside UVa’s Sports Media Relations department. We were all touched by the shocking news that he had died during a walk at Virginia Beach last Saturday. Colley, 46, was a unique character in a sports world that could use a few more.

How well do you know yourself? It’s a question many of us struggle with, as we try to figure out how close we are to who we actually want to be. In a new report, psychologist Timothy D. Wilson from the University of Virginia describes theories behind self-knowledge (that is, how people form beliefs about themselves), cites challenges psychologists encounter while studying it, and offers ways we can get to know ourselves a little better. The Remote Area Medical clinic is the largest mobile clinic in the country, treating thousands of people. This year, about 30 University of Virginia nursing and medical students are getting some additional hands-on training to help at the clinic.
