Editing Washington Papers Is a Calling, Not a Career
For Philander Chase, being a documentary editor is a life, not a career. He retired in March as senior editor of the Papers of George Washington, housed at U.Va.'s Alderman Library. But he does not lack for work. Chase plans to write a book and is also continuing to work on the 19th volume of the Washington Papers' Revolutionary War series.

The Virginia Quarterly Review won one of 25 National Magazine Awards announced Thursday in New York. The magazine, the literary and current affairs quarterly published at the University of Virginia, won the single-topic issue award for its fall issue on South America in the 21st Century, co-edited by Daniel Alarcon and Ted Genoways.
A big backlog of DNA evidence in crime labs all across the country sometimes slows investigations down to a crawl. But research being done at the University of Virginia could eliminate the backlog by speeding up the process. "Using this microchip, we're able to trap sperm cells," pointed out UVA researcher Jessica Norris. "And let the female DNA go free."
The Sorensen Institute for Political Leadership will be featured in a documentary to be shown on public television later this month.
