The University of Virginia intends to tap deeper into its $5 billion endowment to finance its ambitious - and expensive - plans for the future. 'We may be on the cusp of greatness,' said John O. 'Dubby' Wynne, chairman of the UVa Board of Visitors' finance committee. 'We're going to have to be innovative and willing to take some risks.' UVa's Commission on the Future of the University has been developing a long list of proposals that aim to keep UVa in competition with top-tier private institutions such as Harvard, Yale and Princeton.
Under a policy approved Saturday, the University of Virginia may notify a student's parents if their child has mental illness and is deemed a danger to himself or others. UVa's Board of Visitors unanimously endorsed the policy that formally authorizes UVa to contact parents if there is a 'substantial likelihood' in the near future that their child will harm himself or others, as evidenced by the student's recent behavior or any other relevant information.
The University of Virginia and Emily Couric's family broke ground on a state-of-the-art clinical cancer center named in her honor Saturday. It will be the newest addition to the medical center that treated Couric in her battle with cancer.
...This weekend, Virginia's 2008 [men's tennis team] will have a chance to leave an indelible mark in the record books when it closes out its regular season with home matches against N.C. State and Wake Forest. The Wahoos have a chance to finish with a perfect 25-0 record.
... Twelve days ago, [first-year Emil] Heineking competed on the ultimate stage in Edinburgh, Scotland, running for Team USA at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Heineking relished the moment, enjoying his first opportunity to sport the national team's jersey. ... In the 8K race itself, which was the junior men's race, Heineking left it all on the course - and then some. He finished 26th overall in 24:16, just one second behind the top American finisher, German Fernandez, in a meet dominated by runners from Kenya and Ethiopia.
Sharnee Zoll is taking her game to the next level. Literally. The four-year starter at the University of Virginia was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks with the first pick of the third round of the WNBA Draft.

...Other research, meanwhile, has confirmed that our attempt to make men and women equally domesticated will likely fail. Steven E. Rhoads, public policy professor at the University of Virginia and author of Taking Sex Differences Seriously, studied professor couples, figuring they were the most likely to seek perfect equality in the home. Wrong. Men simply weren't as interested in housework as women were and women 'simply like child care more than men,' the study's authors concluded.
... A new study has found flowers are fast losing their fragrance, and the culprit is air pollution ... diminishing the ability of pollinating insects to follow scent trails to their source. ..."The scent molecules produced by flowers in a less polluted environment, such as in the 1800s, could travel for roughly 1,000 to 1,200 metres; but in today's polluted environment downwind of major cites, they may travel only 200 to 300 metres," said Jose D. Fuentes of University of Virginia and a co-author of the study.

...Law professors said the best thing about the [Supreme Court] clinics is the practical experience they provide for the students. The schools also benefit, enjoying favorable publicity and higher student enrollment. Practitioners talk about the school in a way they didn't before, said Daniel Ortiz, who is one of three co-directors of the University of Virginia School of Law Supreme Court Clinic. "And it probably may open up job opportunities for students."
Getting old isn't just in your head, it's in your body and spirit, and the way you live is the way you'll age, according to a leading University of Virginia Medical Center geriatric physician. 'Aging is a lot like a ski lift. Our genetics will get us to the top of the hill, but it's up to us to decide how we want to go down - fast and dangerous and quick or slow and steady,' Dr. Mark E. Williams told an audience at a public conference sponsored by the Aging In Place Business Roundtable and UVa Senior Services on Thursday.
