Long-time U.Va. professor of environmental sciences Jim Galloway has been named a co-winner of this year's Tyler Prize and will receive $100,000. Galloway will receive a gold medal and the money at a ceremony next month in California. He shares the $200,000 prize, known as the 'Nobel Prize of environmental science,'' with Harold Mooney, a Stanford University scientist, according to University of Virginia officials. James Galloway described the "nitrogen cascade" of ecological impacts from fertilizers and fossil fuels.
More than a decade ago, a health program was initiated here as part of a class project by University of Virginia nursing students. The goal: to assist uninsured local children at that time and to ensure access to adequate health care. Now that program - dubbed the Health Cottage Program (the Cottage) -- could be the first expenditure the School Board is looking to cut as it prepares to work with the County Board of Supervisors to reign in costs in a tight budget year.
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's Commission on Climate Change will hold its second meeting today at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia.
