The University of Virginia Telemedicine Program has received a big grant from the Federal Communications Commission. Earlier this month, the FCC announced the launch of a three-year Rural Health Care pilot program to link clinics in outlying areas with major medical centers. ... As part of that effort, the UVa Telemedicine Program is receiving $2.7 million in FCC funding and will serve as the state's lead organization.
The Virginia Quarterly Review, the University of Virginia's literary magazine, is winning prizes and praise as it reinvents itself. The magazine, shepherded for the past four years by editor Ted Genoways, has bulled into new territory with a mix of unusual stories and essays, photographs and designs reminiscent more of National Geographic magazine then a staid, nonprofit journal of poems and prose. "I see it as a journal of ideas and discussion as well," Genoways said of the magazine that now offers politics, science, history and art as well as fiction and poetry.
