Over 6400 people at the University of Virginia have signed up so far for the new emergency notification system called UVA Alerts.
The temperature reached 101 degrees at the University of Virginia's McCormick Observatory Wednesday, but it was not a record for that date. Jerry Stenger of the State Climatology Office at UVA says the record for August 8th is 105 degrees set in 1930.

The University of Virginia Foundation broke ground Wednesday on a new meeting pavilion at the Boar's Head Inn. The $10 million pavilion will contain meeting rooms, reception rooms and a 5,500-square-foot ballroom. Mark Shore, director and CEO of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau, said the city has become a popular destination for meeting and event planners. But he said the area has also lost some events because it lacks large facilities at a single site.
