The panel investigating the April 16 massacre at Virginia Tech wrapped up its work Tuesday in Charlottesville. Meeting for more than nine hours behind closed doors at the University of Virginia, the panel - convened by Gov. Timothy M. Kaine - took one final detailed look at its findings, compiled from hundreds of interviews, mental health and academic records, police reports and more.

Walker and Research Associate Francesco Viola have developed a new tool - an advanced imaging algorithm - that is, quite literally, transforming the way we see things. ... Called the Time-domain Optimized Near-field Estimator (TONE), this novel algorithm enhances the effectiveness of medical ultrasound imaging, providing medical professionals with dramatically improved image resolution and contrast.
The University of Virginia Health System sees thousands of oupatients with diabetes each year, and has become the nation's first academic training facility to install cutting-edge equipment to scan eyes as a part of check-ups. ... An outpatient clinic is now using a retinal scanner to achieve painless eye screenings. Leiner says clinic personnel have scanned roughly 100 diabetic patients, and 20% of them had something wrong.
U.S. medical scientists have created an algorithm that can sort molecular information about a tumor, helping select the best drug treatment. University of Virginia researchers, led by Dr. Dan Theodorescu and computational biologist Jae Lee, used a panel of 60 diverse human cancer cell lines from the National Cancer Institute to devise an algorithm designed to match the best potential treatments for a particular tumor in a specific patient.
