Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) said today he will host a daylong campus security conference Aug. 13 at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. The conference, an outgrowth of the April 16 massacre at Virginia Tech, will allow participants to share information on campus security strategies, participate in panel discussions and look at the latest products and services to improve campus security, according to a news release.
The radiology department at UVA Hospital has received a dual-source CT scanner. Radiology Administrator Jim Amato says the new device provides highly detailed, three-dimensional pictures of blood vessels, bones and other parts of the anatomy. Amato says the new device has twice the scanning power but half the radiation of the newest CT scanners on the market today. UVA is one of the first hospitals in the U.S. to have the scanner.
Thousands of people from Southwest Virginia and neighboring states are expected to line up before dawn for free health care this week. Many of them lack health insurance, and for many it will be their only visit to a doctor or dentist this year. Dozens of physicians, nurses, lab technicians, pharmacists, emergency medical technicians and other employees and affiliates of the University of Virginia Health System will spend three days as volunteers, providing free medical services to an expected 3,000 people at the Virginia-Kentucky Fairgrounds in Wise, Va.

JAMES CITY -- Seventeen students play in the dirt at Historic Jamestowne. It's educational play. A six-week long field school for archaeology organized in part by the University of Virginia began early June and ended this week.
