High-tech research is opening new doors for new graduates in the Valley. A bio-tech firm is expanding its operation in Staunton. Atlantic Research Group monitors and manages medical research across the country from a home-base in the Valley. The company set up shop in Staunton in 2005 and it's doubling its office space for a growing operation. The bio-tech firm will also expand its relationship with local colleges and universities, including Mary Baldwin, UVA and JMU. The goal is to get new grads in high-tech fields to stay in the Valley with high-paying jobs.
When it comes to counting the population of Charlottesville, nobody seems to have the final answer. New census data put the city's July 1, 2006, population at 40,315 people. But the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service, based at the University of Virginia, has a different number. The center's latest estimate, according to Dr. Qian Cai, director of its demographics unit, is that 39,758 people live in Charlottesville, down slightly from the 40,020 counted by the Census in 2000.
