Forty middle school students have been participating in a 10-day Governor's School adventure. But will their work float? At noon today, they will find out when students' reflective sculptures will be set afloat on the pond at the Dell at the University of Virginia. The pond is adjacent to the Curry School of Education on Emmet Street.
In the middle of summer, the University of Virginia's dormitories and fraternity houses lie mostly empty, waiting for a new batch of students to arrive in August. That leaves the buildings vulnerable to break-ins and vandalism, so officers from the Charlottesville and UVa police departments are keeping a close eye on those areas. UVa police reported 68 burglary cases during 2005, down from 92 the previous year.
The University of Virginia had a 13th place finish in the 2006-07 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings. That's a yearly tally of America's best overall collegiate athletic programs. The Cavaliers racked up a total of 945 points this year. North Carolina and Duke were the only ACC rivals that achieved a higher finish than UVA. The Wahoos had the best showing among Virginia schools. While UVA was #13, Virginia Tech finished #48, Old Dominion was #80, and the College of William and Mary was #99.
