Slawson reminded the audience -- mostly those who had done family-medicine training at Virginia -- of a major research study conducted there in the newborn intensive care unit. Michael Spar of UVA's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service says that represents a 4.7% increase from the prior academic year. Spar says the number of public high school graduates has been increasing since 1993. They represent what's called the baby boom echo, because most of these teens have parents born during the baby boom era following World War II.
