On Saturday, May 19, a Senior Summit was held in the [Wakefield Country Day] school's auditorium, with students presenting their theses on a variety of topics. Each had chosen a topic back in the fall and worked on his or her thesis for over six months. As part of the research phase, the seniors traveled several times to Charlottesville to utilize the extensive library resources housed at the University of Virginia.
The Virginia chapter of the ACLU is going to bat for UVA's Cavalier Daily and a student newspaper that's published at Virginia Tech. ACLU representatives will go to a federal court in Richmond on Thursday, so they can challenge a regulation that bans alcohol-related ads in college newspapers. They view Virginia's ABC rules that deal with collegiate publications as unconstitutional.
Two Albemarle supervisors and a small contingent took a trip last week to ... Chapel Hill [N.C.], to look at projects Biscuit Run developers said are similar to what they envision. ...[One of the projects] enjoys a strong relationship with the area's university. Dorrier said he hopes Biscuit Run developers can have a similarly strong relationship with the University of Virginia in areas such as transit and opportunities for UVa expansion within the development.
... along comes Somdev Devvarman. On Memorial Day in Athens, Ga., the UVa junior became Virginia's - and the ACC's - first NCAA singles tennis champion. His win over John Isner not only gives the tennis program the kind of national recognition that UVa's other sports programs might yearn for. But it also showcases a champion who makes UVa look good because of his sportsmanship, maturity, dignity and humility as well as the quality of his play.
Pride, gratitude and dedication may be the appropriate reactions from residents of the Charlottesville area following news that Charlottesville has been selected to host a new Veterans Administration outpatient clinic. … Although no one has officially mentioned it, having a VA clinic here would permit collaboration with the University of Virginia Medical Center. UVa's expertise, as well as that of Martha Jefferson Hospital, could be a boon to the clinic. The region's existing medical community makes it a natural for selection as the site for the clinic.

...There's a movement afoot at colleges and universities that allows alums to stay around for, well, centuries. It's called the campus cemetery. Notre Dame, Duke, The Citadel and the University of Virginia are among the schools that have set aside sites on campus where alumni can loll about and relax, just like they did in their good-old college days. Only this time, no classes. No rush, either.
Red, yellow and green -- they're three colors you may see next time you go to put money in the vending machine for a quick snack. The colors are part of a new color-coding system to help customers make healthier choices. Red is for snacks over 200 calories; items with a yellow sticker have between 140 to 200 calories and if they have under 140 calories they'll get a green sticker. Researchers placed the stickers on a machine in the University of Virginia to see if they would sway what customers would buy.
...The University built one of the first on-campus columbaria in 1991 at the petition of an alumnus, Leigh B. Middleditch, Jr., who wished to be buried on the grounds of the University Cemetery, which had since reached capacity. When the idea was first proposed in 1987, however, there was some resistance among members of the UVA community.
...The site is a hodgepodge of 37 buildings built between the 1870s and the 1950s. The UVA Foundation, which has owned the property since 2000, ...has submitted a proposal to Albemarle County building officials that would see all but 11 structures at the site demolished and the property eventually converted to a research park. The buildings that face demolition, says Foundation CEO Tim Rose, pose environmental hazards, are not viable for re-use in the proposed research park or lack historical significance.
...UVA seemed to come out ahead of the storm since, according to Student Financial Services Director Yvonne Hubbard, the University has always had strict rules against accepting gifts from lenders. 'We have procurement rules at UVA about what a lender can send you.' Hubbard recalls, 'Lenders always did very fancy things that we just never participated in because it makes you feel uncomfortable...
RADFORD – Instead of heading to New England this fall, Radford High School Class of 2007 valedictorian James Rogers will be stocking up on blue and orange attire and heading to Charlottesville and the land of the Wahoo. Rogers was accepted to Harvard but chose to attend the University of Virginia as an Echols Scholar and the recipient of a Jefferson Scholarship, the latter of which provides $80,000 over four years for tuition and room and board at UVa.
The director of the Virginia Film Festival was named the Charlottesville region's 2007 Tourism Person of the Year on Tuesday. Richard Herskowitz, who has organized the annual festival since 1994, received the honor from the Charlottesville-Albemarle Convention & Visitors Bureau for his vision and leadership in making the festival a source of community pride, business growth and national attention. "Coming to Charlottesville has just been the best move of my life. I can't imagine a better place to direct a film festival," Herskowitz said. "I'm just very proud of the festival we've created here....
