Nothing quite like it ever has been done before: a free simulcast of a live matinee performance of Puccini's "La Boheme" by the Washington National Opera to be beamed by satellite to a total of 19 colleges and high schools across the country as well as to two local theaters and the Mall. … The closest college taking part is the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. However, more schools may be added before fall. WNO is supplying explanatory materials to participants, including CDs that can be copied for use by students, ideally ahead of the performance.

Of enduring interest, the natural landscape has long been considered among the noblest and most popular subjects for art. We find comfort in the annual renewal of nature, the rebirth of flowers and the visible growth of plants and trees. Creatively presented in a combination of artfully composed Polaroid emulsion prints, drawings and watercolors by local artist Cary Brown-Epstein, the surprising compositions are the highlight of the University of Virginia Alumni Show presented at the University of Virginia Art Museum through June 3.
The visual arts program for rising fourth- through 12th-graders will be held at the University of Virginia Art Museum. There will be two-week sessions from July 9 to Aug. 3, and a one-week Advanced Academy from Aug. 6 to Aug. 10. An exhibition of student work will be on display at the museum Aug. 12-16, with a reception from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 12.

Mice lacking a gene involved in regulating the daily biological clock stayed trim even when fed a high-fat diet, say University of Virginia researchers. Body clocks, or circadian rhythms, are those innate rhythms in plants and animals, including humans, that regulate basic functions such as sleep, hormone levels and internal temperatures. They run on a 24-hour-or-so cycle, kept on track by internal "clocks."
Charlottesville business owners Richard and Judy Nunley started the Golden Apple Awards seven years ago to make sure a spotlight shines on local teachers, and that light was focused on 39 educators Tuesday night in the Dome Room at the University of Virginia's Rotunda.
"Thomas Jefferson [and] I share a few things in common. . . . We're both violin players. We both had hair that stood out in a crowd. Mr. Jefferson experimented with hemp, and so did I." -- Boyd Tinsley saluting the University of Virginia's founder in a speech on Saturday at Valedictory Exercises. The Charlottesville native and violinist for the Dave Matthews Band "occasionally" attended U-Va. in the '80s, where he studied American history.
...[Last season] Virginia wound up missing the NCAA Championships for the first time since the meet's inception in 1997. This season, however, Virginia has bounced back to have one of its most successful campaigns ever. At the recent South/ Central Regionals, UVa dominated the likes of Ohio State and Tennessee - two top-20 programs. Virginia became the first school to ever sweep all five events as well as all the preliminaries. On Friday, fifth-ranked Virginia begins competition in the NCAA Championships at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. The semifinals and finals are slated for Saturday ...
The official mascot of the University of Virginia is the musketeer-like Cavalier, but unofficially it's the wahoo, a fish that, according to student legend, can drink twice its weight in a day. That's probably not what Thomas Jefferson had in mind when he designed U.Va.'s elegant neoclassical brick buildings and colonnades. ...But he'd be pleased that nearly 200 years later, the university is still the heart of Charlottesville. In a town of 45,000, the 20,000-strong student population is a visible presence, especially along the historic brick-paved pedestrian mall a mile and a half east of cam...
The University of Virginia plans to demolish 23 buildings at the 142-acre former Blue Ridge Hospital site - a move a UVa architecture professor condemns as a tremendous waste of usable and historic buildings. ...[Tim Rose, chief executive officer of the foundation,] said the buildings that the UVa Foundation is saving 'will be stabilized so as to ensure no further deterioration. This is a complicated process but it is being pursued with a deep level of care. The buildings we contemplate taking down include those which have difficult-to-abate environmental issues, do not have any historic signi...

Rankings Methodology Hurts Public Institutions
Chronicle of Higher Education / May 22
In the 1980s, when the U.S. News & World Report rankings of colleges were based solely on reputation, the nation's public universities were well represented at the top. Four of the 14 national universities that were ranked in 1983 were public institutions. In 1987, the first year that the rankings expanded to a top 25, eight were public.
