Wednesday's concert by chart-topping performers Common and Lupe Fiasco is a milestone because it's the first hip-hop show in the John Paul Jones Arena. But if a hard-working group of University of Virginia students gets its way, such events will become commonplace. The stage is set for an opportunity to demonstrate that there's plenty of demand in Charlottesville and the UVa community not only for top-quality hip-hop shows, but also for affordable tickets, organizers say.
UVA's Klockner Stadium will get some additions in a couple of years. The University plans to add a new building at Klockner for men's and women's locker rooms for the lacrosse and soccer programs. UVA Vice-President Leonard Sandridge says there will also be team meeting rooms, a satellite training facility, an area for competition viewing that would also host pre and post-game events as well as a student-athlete lounge. The University recently named James L. Pughsley executive director of the Darden/Curry Partnership for Leaders in Education. The PLE program teaches business practices to school districts, which in turn take these principles and use them to help underachieving schools succeed, according to Darden spokesperson Ken White. Pughsley will direct the training of principals and administrators at struggling schools, White said.
The University of Virginia School of Architecture earned a number one ranking for one its graduate programs. It was ranked first among graduate architecture programs for sustainable design practices and principles. These rankings were part of the eighth annual "America's Best Architecture and Design Schools" study conducted by the Design Futures Council. The graduate architecture program ranked fifth overall, and the graduate landscape architecture program showed up as #6.
Gov. Timothy M. Kaine has reappointed L.F. Payne of Albemarle County and two other members to the University of Virginia's Board of Visitors, while also appointing Goochland County resident Austin Ligon, The Daily Progress has learned.
