Older adults are less reliable eyewitnesses than younger people, a new study has found. Researchers at the University of Virginia arrived at that conclusion after running an experiment in which participants -- some ages 60 to 80, others college-age -- were shown a five-minute video reenactment of a burglary and car chase.
The University of Virginia will host the 20th annual Virginia Film Festival November 1st through the 4th. Festival Director Richard Herskowitz says the theme this year is "Kin Flicks." Herskowitz says the Festival will focus on various images of family life and will include movies such as Mommy Dearest, The Manchurian Candidate, The Shining and The Godfather. Now, some schools have staff members like Creasy who not only read [admission application] files but monitor message boards, field questions on their own Web sites and try to humanize the process. "Some of the information out there is just shockingly, shockingly bad," said [Jeannine] Lalonde, [an assistant dean of admission] who monitors sites for U-Va. and often posts corrections and clarifications.
[...] This year, nearly 20 percent of University freshmen brought a Mac to college versus only 3 percent five years ago. Personal computer ownership is also on the rise. Ten years ago, 26 percent of surveyed freshmen didn't have their own computer at college. By last year, only four, count 'em, four out of 3,092 freshmen surveyed didn't own a personal computer.
CHESAPEAKE - A charitable trust that already has donated thousands to help the city's students is giving $1 million to the University of Virginia for graduates of the city's school system. Starting in the fall of 2009, Chesapeake Public Schools graduates in their senior year at U.Va. will have a chance to receive some of the scholarship money donated by the Harry Bramhall Gilbert Charitable Trust of Virginia Beach.
