The Black Panthers fought for fairness during the Civil Rights era, but the method behind their message was not always popular. Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panther Party, talked to students Thursday night at the University of Virginia. It was created in 1966 and dubbed the "self-defense party" to serve as an alternative to the non-violent Civil Rights Movement. Seale says he is trying to get the leaders of tomorrow to make a connection between the positive steps he made back then, and where society is headed now.
Black Panther Party co-founder Bobby Seale spoke Thursday night on the UVA Grounds as one of the University's events celebrating Black History Month. Seale and Huey Newton formed the Black Panther Party in 1966 as an alternative to the non-violent civil rights movement. Seale says he became inspired to take action the first time he attended a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King. Seale says the fact that there are so many more African-Americans in elected office is a sign of progress.
"Tunes and Composition" will be the theme of the University of Virginia Jazz Ensemble's Winter Concert, which begins 8 p.m. Saturday in Cabell Hall Auditorium. John D'earth will direct a program of big-band compositions that will give soloists a chance to shine.
At a recent job fair at the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education, more than 200 teacher recruiters -- some from as far as Atlanta and Denver -- competed for the attention of about 330 graduates clutching freshly printed resumes. The recruiting team from Loudoun County public schools, which needs to hire more than 700 teachers for the coming academic year, left the fair with a long list of interested candidates. But many of those candidates also had been talking with recruiters from Fairfax, Prince William and Montgomery counties.
Imagine being able to know ahead of time when a baby will get a serious infection and then being able to treat the infection before it can affect his or her tender life. More than a dream, researchers at the University of Virginia Health System have developed a way to monitor babies in neonatal intensive care units and predict sepsis before there is any indication of illness. Sepsis is a serious bloodstream infection that more than doubles the risk of dying for its smallest victims. Results of this research appear in the February issue of the journal Pediatric Research.
Wearing a dark suit and a beret, the co-founder of the Black Panther Party stood behind a podium and addressed a room packed beyond capacity Thursday night. ... Seale was explaining the origins of the Black Panthers during a lecture at the Harrison-Small Auditorium at the University of Virginia. ...Seale spoke to about 250 people Thursday. The auditorium was packed, and listeners who couldn't get in strained to hear from the hallway. In 1968, Seale was arrested for demonstrating at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. A University of Virginia study suggests that older adults are not only more inclined than younger adults to make errors in recollecting details that have been suggested to them, but are also more likely than younger people to have a very high level of confidence in their recollections, even when wrong, according to a press release. The finding has implications regarding the reliability of older persons' eyewitness testimonies in courtrooms.
