[...] Honor codes have been around for years, in University of Virginia's case since the mid-19th century. The codes vary, but they can include signed pledges not to cheat, unsupervised exams, mandatory reporting of cheaters and peer decisions on their punishment.
Semester at Sea, which has been offering educational cruising for many years, takes up to 700 students on each of three long voyages per year. Around-the-world journeys are given in fall and spring, a shorter voyage to one region in summer. Classes are held on board every day at sea, but students get to explore ports of call all over the world. The prestigious University of Virginia is its academic sponsor.
When you are under pressure to raise $1 million a day, it can be tough to walk away from a potential donor. But officials with the University of Virginia say that's exactly what they are willing to do - and have done - to ensure their priorities stay on track. That resolve will be put to the test as UVa embarks on its largest fundraising campaign ever, seeking to raise $3 billion in private money by 2011.
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, based in Lansdowne, Va., near Washington, helps bright but needy students go to college and graduate school....Forthcoming projects include the selection of eight top public and private institutions to expand and adapt a program, created by the University of Virginia, that places recent graduates as college counselors in high schools with low collegegoing rates. The grantees will each receive $1-million and will create a "national college-advising corps."
Robert A. Bland returned to the University of Virginia yesterday to standing ovations, detailing his life as the first African-American to receive an undergraduate degree at the then all-white, all-male school. Bland, 68, said he faced little hostility at U.Va., which he began attending in 1955, during the segregationist era in Virginia. "The hostility we were expecting did not in fact materialize," Bland told an audience of several hundred mostly black students -- many of them first-year students.
Profiling the American Freshman
Inside Higher Ed / January 19
How do you construct a narrative about college freshmen these days? Researchers at the University of California at Los Angeles take their shot annually with a survey of 270,000 entering undergraduates at roughly 400 colleges across the country. This year's data show that the first-year students are increasingly politically minded and moving away from the center of the political spectrum. They are far apart on many social issues and appear mixed on affirmative action. They are concerned about financing their educations and are fully...
