"Images of Women in African Traditional Art," curated by Ben Ray, professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia, opens Friday at the University of Virginia Art Museum. The exhibit offers a wide-ranging look at the variety of sub-Saharan artistic expressions of the feminine in both naturalistic and strikingly abstract forms. Drawn from the museum's collection of African art, the exhibition, consisting of about 25 objects, will be the cornerstone of Ray's spring semester course on African art.

As I finish the second 'volume' of The Dolley Madison Digital Edition (University of Virginia Press, 2004 and forthcoming) it's a good moment to reflect on what it means to be a digital pioneer: a documentary editor who publishes born-digital electronic editions.

[...] 'The outbreak in the UK did in fact involve thousands and thousands of people, which shows you the contagiousness of mumps and how easily it is spread. We feel pretty fortunate given the population over at Uva,' said Roy Crewz with the Thomas Jefferson Area Health Department. There have been no recent cases of the mumps in Charlottesville and if it stays that way, health officials say the outbreak will be declared over.
"Find your dream and follow it" might sound like trite psych-lite worthy of little more than a TV talk show, but a University of Virginia study suggests otherwise. In a three-year study of 830 young women at six sites in three states, the research shows that just a few counseling sessions can dramatically reduce the risk of binge drinking and alcohol-related unplanned pregnancy - if the counseling is of the right type.
The word coming from Virginia's top political, higher education and business leaders Tuesday was clear: the global economy is here, and the commonwealth had better keep up. … In 2006, the legislature appropriated more than a quarter-billion dollars to fund the Commonwealth Research Initiative, designed to kick-start scientific research projects at Virginia's colleges. Many public university officials around the state, particularly at the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech, would like to see that program continued on a more permanent basis.

[...] Perhaps it was fitting, then, that on Monday, the last day of the NCAA Convention here, Division III colleges and universities -- the true little guys of college sports -- took center stage. Division III members debated two controversial measures: one to cap membership, the other to limit the use of male practice players in women's sports.
