The University of Virginia on Friday will consider changing the name of a School of Medicine wing that honors a eugenicist who believed that slavery benefited African Americans. Paul Brandon Barringer joined UVA’s faculty in 1889 and instituted new technology at UVA’s medical school, expanded training for future doctors and worked to establish the university’s first hospital. In 1901, the UVA Hospital opened.
“On the whole, this is a completely unnecessary hiccup for Republicans in what is already a tough year,” UVA political analyst Larry Sabato said. “Party leaders can’t be happy with Freitas and the local GOP committee.”
Charlottesville schools are moving to something new – a philosophy articulated by a UVA professor of education who’s consulting with local teachers. Carol Tomlinson has written 32 books on differentiated learning – keeping children at different levels of readiness in a single classroom, bringing reading, math and arts specialists in to work with small groups and individuals, so every kid has an enriched experience. 
I got in touch with Mark DeBoer, a UVA pediatric endocrinologist who has done research on the sleep habits of American 5-year-olds. DeBoer pulled data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Birth Cohort, a nationally representative study that tracked the growth and development of 14,000 kids born in 2001.
Francis E. Warnock, professor of business administration at UVA’s Darden School of Business, suggests that the short-term effects of the rate cut could include slightly faster economic growth, as well as the possibility of a weaker dollar and higher inflation rates. “The rate cut is largely because the Fed is worried about future shocks such as trade wars negatively affecting sentiment and thus companies’ decisions to expand,” he says.

Researchers may have uncovered a mechanism that controls the spread of prostate cancer, a new study shows. "We have uncovered a novel non-coding RNA that may drive prostate cancer," Dan Gioeli, a researcher at the University of Virginia and study senior author, said in a news release. "This discovery could lead to new biomarkers of prostate cancer and more effective therapies for advanced prostate cancer."

The U.S. News & World Report annual hospital list ranks the University of Virginia Medical Center as the top hospital in Virginia. The report says UVA Medical Center has the 26th best adult cancer treatment program nationwide. It also has the 15th ranked Ear, Nose and Throat program, and the 35th best Gastroenterology program.
Cancer researchers at the University of Virginia say they found the key that controls growth and progression of prostate cancer. Researchers said that finding offers a potential avenue to stop the progression of this disease.

Charlottesville High School and six area elementary schools are sharing Shannon Foundation grants to pay for special classroom projects in the coming school year. The Shannon Foundation was established in 1990 to provide funds to public school teachers in Charlottesville and Albemarle County for innovative programming. The foundation is named for the late former University of Virginia President Edgar F. Shannon Jr. and his late wife, Eleanor, in honor of their contributions to public education over many years.
U.S. News & World Report has had to adjust its popular lists of best colleges because at least five schools admitted to misreporting statistics. For now, all other schools' rankings in the 2019 Best Colleges remain the same. So, on the list of top public schools, UCLA is first, then comes University of Virginia in third place and University of Michigan–Ann Arbor in fourth place.
A memorial to enslaved laborers is under construction at the University of Virginia, and the school has been actively working to locate descendants of the enslaved workers. Myra Anderson is one of those descendants. Her eighth-generation great-uncle Thirmston Hern’s role at UVA is documented in "Those Who Labor for My Happiness: Slavery at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello," a book by Monticello historian Lucia “Cinder” Stanton.
