Only 4 percent of violence toward others in American society is attributable to mental illness, according to John Monahan, a professor of law, psychology and psychiatry at the University of Virginia.
“School shootings are prevented because shooters make threats – people pay attention to those threats and intervene, and those shootings are prevented,” said Dewey Cornell, a UVA forensic clinical psychologist and education professor who focuses on school violence prevention. “We need to focus a lot more on prevention … the best way to prevent school shootings everywhere is to help our kids be successful at school.”

A network of SIF sensors has been deployed across the U.S. to evaluate croplands and other natural ecosystems. Guan’s lab has launched two other long-term SIF systems in Nebraska to compare rain-fed and irrigated fields in corn-soybean rotations. “By applying this technology to different regions, we can ensure the efficacy of this tool in countless growing conditions for a myriad of plants,” said Xi Yang, a UVA assistant professor who designed this study’s SIF monitoring system.
