September 9, 2009 — The University of Virginia's photography program, the McIntire Department of Art and the Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative welcome acclaimed photographer and poet Tim Davis for a residency Sept. 23-27 in conjunction with an exhibition of his work in Ruffin Gallery. "My Life in Politics" will be on display Sept. 25 through Oct. 23.
A Friday Opening reception will be held Sept. 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the gallery.
"We are very excited to have Tim Davis coming here for a residency. His photographic work explores institutional spaces of rich history and purpose, making the University of Virginia a perfect venue for an exhibition," said Pamela Pecchio, an assistant professor of photography.
The works included in the exhibit are large-scale color photographs from large-format film. After 9/11, Davis traveled the country for two years in search of images of Americans' democratic and political identity in everyday life.
"His photographs, refusing to propagandize, imply a pity for both the left and right, a sense that democracy is messy business," wrote New York Times critic Michael Kimmelman of the exhibit when it appeared in New York City in 2004.
During his visit, Davis will work with students in intermediate photography classes and critique the work of distinguished majors in photography and students in the Aunspaugh Fifth Year fellowship program.
Davis teaches photography at Bard College and Yale University. He is the author of five books of photography: "The New Antiquity," "My Life in Politics," " Illilluminations," "Permanent Collection" and "Lots."
He also is the author of two books of poems: "American Whatever" and "Dailies."
Davis has exhibited his work in solo shows in New York, London, Los Angeles, Chicago, Brussels, Geneva, Atlanta and Miami as well as in numerous group shows. He was a Discovery Award finalist at the 2004 Arles Photography Festival and was the 2007-08 Joseph H. Hazen Rome Prize Fellow in residence at the American Academy in Rome. His photographs are included in the collections of the Guggenheim, Metropolitan, Hirshhorn, Walker High and other museums.
During his residency, Davis will lecture Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m. in Campbell Hall, room 153.
On Sept. 26, Davis will give a poetry reading, "PerfectlyNormalPoems," at The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative, 209 Monticello Road in Charlottesville.
All events are free and open to the public. Free parking for the Sept. 24 lecture is available at the Culbreth Road garage.
Davis's residency and exhibition are supported by the Annual Fund to the Arts Grant from U.Va.'s Alumni Arts Council.
