September 22, 2009 — The deadline for nominations for the 2009 Thomas Jefferson Awards is noon on Thursday.
The Thomas Jefferson Awards Committees are seeking nominations of faculty members who have exemplified in character, work and influence the principles and ideals of Thomas Jefferson, and who have advanced the objectives for which Jefferson founded the University.
One award, to recognize excellence in service to the University, has been sponsored by the Robert Earll McConnell Foundation since 1955. A second award, newly established this year by the Alumni Board of Trustees of the University of Virginia Endowment Fund, Inc., will recognize excellence in scholarship.
The Thomas Jefferson Award is the highest honor given to members of the University of Virginia community. Recipients must have served on the faculty for 15 or more years. Retired faculty members are not eligible. Each award consists of a citation and a cash prize.
The nominations, including supporting data such as resume/curriculum vita and letters of recommendation, are to be submitted to the Thomas Jefferson Awards Committees, Leake Cottage, P.O. Box 400139.
The awards will be presented by President John T. Casteen III at this year's Fall Convocation, on Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. in the John Paul Jones Arena.
