June 1, 2012 — During June, there will be controlled, underground detonations as part of the expansion of the University of Virginia's North Grounds Recreation Center, which will include a new pool being built into a slope.
The detonations will occur about 10 feet below ground, once daily, either between 9 and 11:30 a.m. or between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., starting June 6. Blasting may last up to 15 minutes, depending on weather and other scheduled activities.
During the detonation period, vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the area will be halted; a siren will sound at the beginning and end of the operation, and blast mats will cover the designated areas. Adjacent buildings may remain occupied during the blasts, but tenants will be notified before detonation begins.
Controlled detonation operations are expected to last for two to three weeks. No explosives will be stored on site.
