April 14, 2010 — The University of Virginia Art Museum invites the public to its annual "Flowers Interpret Art" event, held in conjunction with Garden Week. On April 20, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the museum will be open without charge for visitors to enjoy an array of flower arrangements inspired by works of art on view – and to vote for their favorites.
The flower arrangements are prepared by area residents of all ages. Complimentary refreshments will be provided throughout the day by the museum's Volunteer Board, which sponsors the event.
This year, Flowers Interpret Art showcases artwork from the museum's own collection, ranging from the 15th century to the mid-20th century, and installed to encourage a consideration of artists' practice across time. These landscapes, portraits and abstract works ask viewers and arrangers alike to ponder the varied social conditions that have caused them to come into being.
At 6 p.m., the Volunteer Board will offer its traditional Flowers Interpret Art Cocktail Buffet Dinner. Tickets, which must be purchased in advance, are $30 for members and $35 for non-members. Space is limited. Reservations can be made by calling 434-924-7458 no later than April 16.
Parking for the evening event is available at Culbreth Road Garage and at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located one block beyond the museum on the opposite side of Rugby Road.
