Carter G. Woodson Institute to Host Lecture on Oct. 29

October 27, 2008 — The University of Virginia's Carter G. Woodson Institute will host a lecture by Woodson pre-doctoral fellow Brandi Hughes. "News from Africa: Spelman's Missionary 'Mothers' on the Threshold of the Colonial State, 1881-1922," will be held Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in Newcomb Hall's Kaleidoscope Room.

From 1890 through the end of World War I, Atlanta's Spelman Seminary, a premier Baptist institute for black women and girls, published letters of its former missionary alumnae in a serial column entitled "News from Africa." Hughes' presentation explores the significance of these letters and the foreign missionary service from which they originated as an index of the historical processes that linked post-emancipation politics in the U.S. with the international colonization of Africa.

A reception will follow in 108 Minor Hall.
