Sept. 1, 2006 - The Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia is teaming with WVPT-Virginia's Public Television to launch the "Miller Center Forums," a broadcast version of the popular nonpartisan weekly lecture series that connects public officials, scholars and journalists with students and well-informed audiences to discuss the critical issues of the day.
Beginning Friday, Sept. 15, at 9:00 p.m. ET, WVPT will broadcast the Forums, held in the Miller Center's Newman Pavilion, to audiences throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia region, and offer them to public television stations throughout Virginia.
"Working with WVPT provides an important opportunity to bring even more people into the kind of thoughtful conversations that the Forums are known for," said George Gilliam, assistant director for public programs at the Miller Center. "It allows us to expand what we've accomplished with our live audiences and webcasts to provide a genuine give-and-take on the most critical questions that we face as a nation."
"The Miller Center provides a venue for some of our greatest thinkers," said Bert Schmidt, president and general manger of WVPT-Virginia's Public Television. "It's an important asset for the entire country and WVPT is proud to bring these Forums to a larger viewing audience."
Past Forum speakers include: author and Newsweek managing editor Jon Meacham; Lt. General Brent Scowcroft and Lawrence S. Eagleburger; Ambassador Nancy Soderberg; Washington Post reporter/columnist David S. Broder; New Yorker staff writer George Packer; and New York Times columnist David Brooks. The 2006-07 schedule includes author and former National Security Council member William B. Quandt; New Yorker staff writer Lawrence Wright, author of "The Looming Tower"; Sylvia Mathews, President of Global Development for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and Washington Post Pentagon correspondent Thomas Ricks, author of "Fiasco: The American Military Adventure in Iraq."
