Sept. 26, 2006 -- The University of Virginia Art Museum will feature the exhibit “Complicit! Contemporary American Art and Mass Culture” at the Final Friday reception on Sept. 29 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
‘Complicit!,’ curated by artist, art historian and Robertson Professor of Media Studies Johanna Drucker, features work by contemporary artists involved in a vital dialogue with mass culture. Their work challenges our assumptions about the identity and function of art in a world saturated with media images and messages. Many are using the materials of mass culture as the very material from which they make art, acknowledging the seductive power of popular imagery.
Final Friday receptions are free to students and museum members. Students must bring a driver's license or passport identification to verify they are 21 or older. For all others, there is a $3 admission charge.
For information about the museum, call (434) 924-3592 or visit its Web site at www.virginia.edu/artmuseum.
