February 28, 2006 — The University of Virginia Art Museum’s Family Day on March 12 will offer activities in conjunction with the exhibit “A Soldier’s Life: Selections from the Charles J. Brown Historic Military Figures Trust.” The exhibit encompasses more than 3,000 miniature lead figures from Brown’s collection that depict the military and the evolution of warfare, weapons and uniforms from ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome through World War I.

Collector Charles J. Brown, who began his passion for collecting toy soldiers as a young boy and whose total collection numbers more than 7,000 figures, will be on hand to talk about collecting and the exhibit. Participants are invited to bring their own collection of miniature lead figures to display and receive feedback. Also a few pieces from any collection, such as coins, shells, dolls and other collectables are welcome for display. Space is limited, but labels will be provided

Kids and families are invited to wear their own uniforms, including scout and band uniforms or try on a selection of uniforms provided. Participants will also be able to paint toy soldiers and have their face painted.

Docent tours will be given at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.
