January 20, 2006 — Sunil Bald and Yolande Daniels will give the Michael Owen Jones Memorial Lecture at the University of Virginia School of Architecture on Friday, Jan. 27.
Bald and Daniels are partners in Studio SUMO, a New York-based architecture collaborative they co-founded. Recent SUMO projects include a temporary space for the Museum of African Art in Long Island City, N.Y.; MoCADA, a museum of contemporary art in Brooklyn's BAM cultural district; and the Josai University New School of Management in Sakado, Japan.
SUMO's work has been featured in publications including Architectural Record, Architecture, FRAME, Global Architecture, The Journal of Architecture, The New York Times, The New York Post and Dwell.
SUMO’s work has been exhibited at the National Building Museum (Washington, D.C.), MOMA, the Field Museum (Chicago), the GA Gallery (Tokyo) and the Urban Center (New York).
Bald has received a Young Architects award from the Architectural League, a Graham Foundation fellowship, a NYFA fellowship, a Fulbright fellowship and was a finalist in MOMA’s Young Architects program. He received a bachelor of architecture degree from the Universtiy of California, Santa Cruz, and on receiving his master’s in architecture from Columbia University, he was awarded the AIA Medal. Over the last decade, he has taught design and theory at Cornell University, Columbia, the University of Michigan and Parsons School of Design. His research interests include modernism, popular culture and nation-making in Brazil, a subject about which he has published a series of articles.
Daniels has taught architectural design at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, Pratt Institute, Columbia and City College in New York. She is a graduate of the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program (Studio Program ’97 and Critical Studies Program ’98), Columbia (M.Arch., ’90), and City College (B.S. architecture ’87). She has exhibited work at galleries in New York, including the Thomas Healy Gallery and Henry Urbach Architecture.
