University of Virginia politics professor John Owen’s latest book thinks about forms of government the way biologists think about evolution.
“I have studied the effects of democracy on international relations my whole career,” Owen said. “Evolutionary biology says the environment selects for certain traits in animals and plants that make it easier to survive and reproduce. Let’s think about the international environment as something that can select for democracy sometimes, or select for authoritarianism sometimes.”
Owen ponders the question in “The Ecology of Nations: American Democracy in a Fragile World Order,” for which he has received the 2025 Grawemeyer Award for World Order, announced Monday by the University of Louisville.
The award highlights creative ideas as ways to improve the culture. The awards committee selects nominees from around the world, deeming the winning ideas as relevant to society at large. Each recipient receives $100,000.
In “The Ecology of Nations,” Owen looks at why democracy is “wobbling” – not just in America, but around the world, and how international relations affect democracy.
