The University of Virginia community once again came together, virtually, for another “Arts on the Hill” performance featuring an abundance of talented Hoos.

The fourth episode of the digital show, which UVA President Jim Ryan and aide Matt Weber launched to help keep the UVA community connected through the power of art, included several different performances. Dr. William Petri, professor of internal medicine and pathology and associate director of microbiology, opened with a trombone performance of George Gershwin’s “Summertime,” accompanied by Doris Vander Meulen on piano. Petri is an infectious disease expert and is part of a UVA team working on developing a vaccine for COVID-19.

Ryan opened the video with a word of thanks for all of the researchers, doctors, nurses, staff and care providers working at UVA Health, saying, “You are not just our colleagues and our friends, you are also our heroes.”

The episode also included an a cappella performance by the Virginia Gentlemen, a spring dance rehearsal filmed earlier in the semester when students were still together at UVA, a number from the First Year Players cast of “Kiss Me Kate,” a violin performance by first-year student Diego Wang, a poem called “Love in the Time of Coronavirus” by School of Continuing and Professional Studies associate professor Charlotte Matthews, and a cover of “Rosie” by third-year student Veronica Merril and second-year student Austin Cox.

“Arts on the Hill” will continue to be released each Sunday at 8 p.m. Anyone interested in submitting a performance or making a recommendation can email uvaarts@virginia.edu.
