Student: Dad, come get in.
Student: So, I’m moving into my freshman year, or first-year, dorm. Sorry. The drive was like pretty long, honestly. I think we drove for, like, 10 hours.
Family Member: Got up early, and…
Student: We did not get up early. That’s a lie.
Student: The volunteers that were here helping us move in, especially when it was raining, it was really helpful to have them.
Family Member: At first, I did think he packed a lot. And I thought, “Oh, this is not going to fit.” We actually finished, and it looks pretty good.
Family Member: She was amazing. I didn’t have to do very much. She’s extremely organized.
Student: We’re from Charleston, South Carolina. I wanted to go somewhere new and meet new people. UVA was so welcoming. I went to some other schools, but nobody had the same, like, warmth.
Student: I grew up coming here to football games.
Student: Maybe ninth grade. Ever since then, I set my sights on UVA.
Student: I just wanted a school that had big school spirit. Also, I wanted something that was going to be academically challenging. And that’s what you get at UVA.
Student: It’s a very scenic Grounds. Yeah, except for the parts where you have to walk up hills constantly. That’s the one thing.
Family Member: Does Grounds mean campus?
Student: Yes. It’s Grounds.
Student: But I’m just, you know, really excited to finally get on with this after waiting the whole summer.
Student: I really want to look into, like, intramurals and stuff. I’m a pretty competitive person. Maybe, like, volleyball, tennis. I know pickleball is on the rise.
Student: I like to volunteer in the community. So, I already signed up with Madison House. So, I’m hoping to do some volunteering.
Family Member: We’re going to miss her energy in the house. For sure.
Family Member: He’s kind of funny. So, I’m going to miss, like, how funny he is.
Student: I’m going to miss the food, especially. I don’t think I can get that food anywhere else.
Family Member: It’ll be bittersweet.
Student: I’m going to miss my cat a lot.
Family Member: Oh, the cat.
Student: I’m going to miss you, but I’m also going to miss the cat.
Student: I’m going to miss my dog.
Family Member: I just plan to send pictures of the dog. And then maybe she’ll send me back a thumbs up, so I’ll know everything’s OK.
Family Member: Yeah, she got GPS on him. So, we’re going to know where he at.
Family Member: We shed some tears last night, just the two of us. I know you don’t know that.
Family Member: It’s really a mixed bag of emotions. I’m so happy and proud of her. But it’s hard letting them go.
Family Member: Love the school, and it really gives me peace of mind knowing that her sister is going to be here, too. This is the baby. So, this one’s probably going to…
Student: Aw. Don’t cry.
Family Member: Very proud. Personality, smarts, he’s going to be something.
Family Member: He’s always had that initiative and always got good grades. I know he’s going to do very well.
Family Member: Overwhelmingly grateful that she has this opportunity. Obviously, for myself, I’m going to miss her every day.
Student: I’m not quite ready to be an adult, but I…
Family Member: No, you are.
Student: At this point, I’ve just got to go out and do it.
