If you had to capture it in one word the defining feature of an education at UVA, is vibrancy. To me, education is everything. It's deeply personal for me.
All these different kinds of people with all these different kinds of ideas come together and learn together and learn from one another. The purpose of seeking an education is empowerment, but the key is really what you do with that empowerment. You can keep it to yourself, or you actually can give it to others.
The atmosphere at UVA is phenomenal. It's unlike any other school, really. Our students are really amazing individuals. They see each other as teammates, as collaborators. UVA expects all of us to just pour out everything we have into the interests that really make us us. It has world class academics, but also faculty who care about students as people.
My goal for my students really is mastery. Allowing the content and the material that we talk about to actually transform them, literally, not just philosophically. We want them to be able to excel in anything they choose to do. UVA had the opportunities that other schools were not offering me. The support, the financial aspects of it were incredible.
We make sure that we can welcome people, regardless of where they come from and regardless of their ability to pay the cost of their education. To bring students to UVA can make this education that I think is really the best education around accessible to everyone who has the talent and the desire to join us is absolutely critical. The opportunity to be at a place like the University of Virginia, to meet new people, explore, learn, and gain an education, you can't measure it.
The more that we can do to continue to welcome students regardless of their backgrounds, and to make it possible for them to attend the University of Virginia, the better off we are going to be as a university.
Students can't be their best if they feel like they don't belong. Students need to feel like this is their home. The expectation to provide that voice that you have is easy to do because of the support you have.
People have made sure I have what I need to succeed. Donors or my professors, faculty, and staff. This place is incredible. There is this responsibility to really pave a future that is really equitable for everyone.
This is how we make our mark on the world, bringing students here from everywhere and making them part of a singular community that I think shapes them for the rest of their lives.
Every student that leaves UVA leaves with a sense that they want to make the world a better place. I know these are aspirational goals, but if anybody's going to prepare me to do it, it's gonna be UVA.
I hate to be cliche-ish. It's kind of cliche. I think it's really true though. And hopefully this doesn't come across as cheesy. What makes UVA special is the people. I just love to see students maximize their opportunities.
The university actually expects leaders out of their students. What makes a UVA education unique is the combination of experiences that students have. UVA is a place where students surprise themselves. It's a place where remarkable people do more together than they could do alone.
