The University of Virginia on Wednesday celebrates Founder’s Day, commemorating the birthday of Thomas Jefferson. Along with the Thomas Jefferson Foundation at Monticello, the University will present its highest external honors, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medals, and recognize Mary Hughes, the recently retired University Landscape Architect, by planting a tree in her honor in front of Pavilion III on the Lawn. Find a schedule of events at the Founder’s Day site.

Above is an aerial view of Jefferson’s “Academical Village,” which sought to fulfill his vision of bringing faculty members and students together in an intentional learning community – and two centuries later, still serves as the heart of the University.
