Deserving Employees Sought for Annual Awards

February 13, 2009 — Nominations are now being accepted for the Outstanding Contribution Awards, the highest honors given to staff at the University of Virginia.

Hard copies of the nominations must be received in the Office of University Human Resources, P.O. Box 400127, 914 Emmet Street, Michie South, by 5 p.m. on March 11.

The nomination package must include an original nomination, a completed nomination form, and at least one additional endorsement by an individual who has direct knowledge of the employee's contributions. Either the nominator or the endorser must be the nominee's supervisor. Nomination forms are available in pdf and Word format on the Human Resources Web site, or through Employee Council representatives and the person who handles human resources in your area.

Committees from the Academic Division, Medical Center, and College at Wise will choose the winners.

Each award recipient will be publicly recognized and receive an engraved gift and $1,000. This award is exclusive of any other pay action or any other potential monetary recognition through departmental programs such as Rewards and Recognition.

The University also uses the nomination process to identify employees for the Governor's Awards, the state's recognition program. Select nominations will be submitted to the state for consideration for Governor's Awards, which are given by the Virginia Public Service Reward and Recognition Steering Committee.

Recipients of both Outstanding Contribution Awards and Governor's Awards will be announced during the Virginia Public Service Week, May 4-10.

As part of its celebration, the state is offering the opportunity for interested employees to participate as "Ambassadors" during the Governor's Awards Ceremony. Any employee who is interested in serving should complete and submit the Ambassador Sign-up form by April 3. There will be a random drawing from all applicants to select 35 Ambassadors from all regions of the Commonwealth. (If selected, employees must receive permission from their supervisors to attend. Travel expenses are to be reimbursed by the State's Department of Human Resources Management. The time will not be deducted from annual leave.)
