May 28, 2010 — On the road, Donna Eddy, a nurse with the University of Virginia's Malcolm Cole Child Care Center, is known as "GWTBV" (Grandma with the Blue Van). In the stands at the John Paul Jones Arena, she's a " 'Hoos ladies" basketball fan. And at Malcolm Cole, she's a role model for everyone who cares for children.

"When she isn't caring for sick children in the center, she is researching, advocating and learning more about how to keep us illness-free," wrote a colleague in nominating her for the Leonard W. Sandridge Outstanding Contribution Award. "She keeps us all safe and healthy."

Eddy began her career at U.Va. 30 years ago as a pediatric nurse at Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center. Now she allows other clinicians and hospital staff to be there for their patients even when their own children are ill.

"For the children, the best part of getting sick is spending the day with Donna," wrote another nominator. "She has a great bedside manner and has the best toys."
