End the Semester on a High Note with Rita Dove

April 9, 2009 — Poet Rita Dove will read from her new collection, "Sonata Mulattica," at 8 p.m. on April 21 in the University of Virginia Bookstore. The event is free and open to the public.

Dove, Commonwealth Professor of English at U.Va., is a former poet laureate of the United States and a recipient of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry and the National Humanities Medal.

The poems in "Sonata Mulattica: A Life in Five Movements and a Short Play" are Dove's lyric rhapsody on the life and legend of George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower, a Euro-African musical prodigy of the early 19th century and erstwhile intimate of Ludwig van Beethoven, now largely forgotten and ripe for poetic recovery.

Dove will autograph copies of her book following the reading.
