HR Issues Call for Outstanding Employee Nominations

March 22, 2010 — University of Virginia Human Resources has renamed its annual Outstanding Contribution Awards for Leonard W. Sandridge, U.Va.'s executive vice president and chief operating officer. The new name for the awards – the highest honors for staff at the University – recognizes Sandridge's years of dedicated service to the University and his role as an avid champion of U.Va.'s staff. Sandridge plans to retire in December.

In addition, the awards will now be funded in perpetuity through a gift from Douglas W. DuPont.

The deadline for 2010 nominations is April 16.

Nominations must include an original nomination letter and contact information. Nomination information is available on the UHR Web site and is also available through employee council representatives and the person who handles human resources matters in each area.

There are many dedicated, hard-working staff across Grounds, and this is an opportunity to recognize their excellence, said Susan Carkeek, vice president and chief human resources officer. Selection committees from the Academic Division, Medical Center and U.Va.'s College at Wise choose employees to receive this award.

Each recipient is publicly recognized and receives an engraved gift as well as a $1,000 cash award. This award is exclusive of any other pay action or any other potential monetary recognition through routine departmental programs such as the Rewards and Recognition program.

The award winners will be recognized at the Service Awards Day ceremony, scheduled for May 19 at 1:30 p.m. at the John Paul Jones Arena. Employees with 10, 15 and 20 years of service also will be honored.

Names of award recipients are customarily forwarded to the Commonwealth for consideration for further recognition through the Governor's Awards. Information on those awards will be shared as soon as it becomes available.

Nominations must be received in the Office of University Human Resources, P.O. Box 400127, 914 Emmet Street, Michie South, by 5 p.m. Scanned nominations may also be submitted electronically to willy@virginia.edu.
