After years of hard work and anticipation, University of Virginia School of Medicine students are ready to take the next step.
The class of 2025 gathered Friday at Old Cabell Hall to celebrate “Match Day,” the moment medical school students nationwide learn where they will train as residents. At noon, with friends and family ready to celebrate with them, the UVA students simultaneously opened their envelopes, revealing their destinations.
For Giorgia Borgarelli, it will be a short trip. Borgarelli is among 19 UVA students staying in Charlottesville to complete residencies at UVA Health University Medical Center.

Graduating UVA medical student Giorgia Borgarelli is excited she’ll be staying in Charlottesville to complete her residency at UVA Health University Medical Center. “So, there was a huge sigh of relief and excitement to get to stay here at such a great institution.”
“It takes a village, and UVA gives you that village, and Charlottesville is a great town. So, there was a huge sigh of relief and excitement to get to stay here at such a great institution,” said Borgarelli, who plans to practice family medicine. “I’m thrilled. However many adjectives there are for thrilled, that’s how I’m feeling.”
Students in the class of 2025 are matched into 21 different specialties in 34 different states. Davis Tran is on his way to Philadelphia to practice internal medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
“It’s a dream come true,” he said. “I used to be a teacher, and I’m trying to do my things one day at a time and hopefully inspire the next group of students on the medical side now. I’m looking forward to having the privilege of caring for patients on their worst days, but also on the brightest days as well.”

After four years of rigorous study, Borgarelli said she is “relieved and proud.”
“The journey to get here is not linear. There are a lot of downs and a few ups,” she said. “I couldn’t be happier to stick around for three more years.”
