In Memoriam: Arthur Frederick Stocker

January 19, 2010 — Arthur Frederick Stocker, 95, died in Charlottesville on Jan. 13. A U.Va. professor emeritus of classics, Stocker was on the faculty from 1946 to 1984 and twice served as chairman of the department.

Stocker, who was born Jan. 24, 1914 in Bethlehem, Pa., graduated from Williams College and received his master's and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard.

From 1942 to 1946, he served in what was then the United States Army Air Forces, most of the time in Colorado Springs, Colo., where he was historical officer in the headquarters of the Second Air Force.

Hired at U.Va., Stocker was chairman of the classics department from 1955 to 1963 and from 1968 to 1978. He also was associate dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences from 1962 to 1966.

Stocker was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, the Raven Society, the American Philological Association and the Medieval Academy of America. He was president of the Classical Association of Virginia from 1949 to 1952 and president of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South from 1971 to 1972.
