In Memoriam: Dr. William MacIlwaine

July 23, 2012 — William Andrew MacIlwaine III died July 6 in Charlottesville. He was 79. He graduated from the University of Virginia College of Arts & Sciences in 1944 and the School of Medicine in 1947. MacIlwaine was a clinical assistant professor of internal medicine at the School of Medicine and became medical examiner for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

He also was assistant resident in internal medicine from 1948 until 1949, a fellow in internal medicine from 1949 until 1950 and American College of Physicians research fellow from 1950 until 1951. He then went into private practice and lived in Waynesboro.

Over his career, his hospital affiliations included the Waynesboro Community Hospital where he served as president of the medical staff, and King's Daughters Hospital in Staunton, as well as the U.Va. Medical Center.

MacIlwaine was a life member of both the American College of Physicians and the University of Virginia Medical Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Claiborne Jarratt, five sons and their families.
