Modern Art History Expert to Give Talk on Cubism and Decoration at U.Va.

April 2, 2007 -- David Cottington, professor of modern art history at Kingston University, England, will give a McIntire Department of Art lecture at the University of Virginia on April 17 at 5:30 p.m. Cottington's talk, "Cubism and Decoration: Modern Life and Death," in Campbell Hall, room 160, is free and open to the public.

From its Parisian heyday, cubism displayed an ambivalence between modernism and decoration that most existing accounts of its history have overlooked. In his talk, Cottington will discuss a re-articulation of the cubist movement’s fascination with ‘simultaneity’ in terms of consumerist hedonism that was a key feature of French culture between 1910 and 1925.
