Two UVA Health doctors have been named among the nation's top physicians by Newsweek. Dr. Francis Shen and Dr. Adam Shimer were listed among the top 150 spine surgeons in 20 states with the most practicing physicians.
“This is a well-earned honor for Dr. Shen and Dr. Shimer,” said Dr. Bobby Chhabra, who chairs UVA Health’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery. “Their skill and commitment – backed by our team at UVA Health – have helped thousands of patients from across Virginia and beyond with significant back conditions.”
Newsweek's annual ranking includes factors such as peer ratings, evaluations of past procedures from Medicare data, online surveys of more than 30,000 medical experts and certifications from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
A two-time graduate of UVA, Shimer has researched degenerative disc disease and also specializes in complex cervical spine surgery, adult spinal deformity and minimally invasive treatment of spinal conditions.
Shen's specialties include cervical and thoracic surgery, degenerative conditions and tumors of the spine.
The physicians currently practice at one of the largest outpatient orthopedic centers in the country, UVA Health Orthopedic Center Ivy Road.
The recognition comes as more than 1 million patients in the U.S. undergo spine-related surgical procedures each year, according to the Cureus Journal of Medical Science.
