Panelists to Discuss June Events and University’s Future on Sept. 12

Even as the fall semester gets rolling, University of Virginia faculty still have questions about the Board of Visitors’ actions surrounding the resignation and reinstatement of President Teresa A. Sullivan this summer – and what it means down the road for the University. A panel of U.Va. leaders will discuss “The June Events and After: The Future of the University” on Sept. 12 at 4:30 p.m. in Nau Hall, room 101.

The event, free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Faculty Senate and the Institute of the Humanities and Global Cultures. In June, the senate spearheaded the successful campaign for Sullivan’s reinstatement.

Sullivan and other leaders have pointed out that U.Va. shares the same challenges increasingly facing institutions of higher learning, especially public colleges and universities, in areas such as financial governance, curriculum and innovation.

Panelists will include: law professor George Cohen, who chairs the Faculty Senate; David Breneman, an expert on higher education economics and former dean of the Curry School of Education;  Siva Vaidhyanathan, who chairs the media studies department in the College of Arts & Sciences; anthropology professor Richard Handler, who directs the Global Development Studies program; and Rebecca Dillingham, associate director of the Center for Global Health

Spanish professor Ricardo Padron will moderate the discussion.
