Nov. 27, 2007 — During Cavalier Kettles Weekend, Friday, Nov. 30 to Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., there will be a special opportunity for University of Virginia groups to staff one of the 10 kettle locations at Barracks Road Shopping Center or Fashion Square Mall.
Dorms, fraternities, sororities, interest groups of all types, service groups, athletic teams and faculty/staff departments are invited to ring kettle bells to help The Salvation Army raise money to help those in need during the Christmas season. No solicitation is necessary — just stand and ring the bell; people know what to do.
The Salvation Army encourages groups to bring Christmas music, sing carols, etc. Groups are asked to commit to take at least one half-day (five hours) at a single location and break into the shifts that best suit your group. It takes just 20 volunteers to cover a kettle for a whole day – 10 until 8 — working in shifts. Organizers recommend one- or two-hour shifts, with two to a maximum of six volunteers per shift, giving everyone a chance to participate. Overlap the shifts so that the kettle is never left unattended.
Volunteers must be clean and neat in appearance and should be courteous and interact politely with the public. Dress warmly and wear comfortable shoes.
