July 10, 2012 — University Transit Service is detouring its buses in the University of Virginia's Central Grounds to avoid the McCormick Road bridge over Emmet Street.
The detour is prompted by Virginia Department of Transportation's plans to reduce the weight limit on the bridge to around eight tons. The detour impacts the Northline, University Loop and the Central Grounds Shuttle and impacts bus stops along McCormick Road. Once the bridge is posted, vehicles weighing more than eight tons will not be able to cross the span.
Specifics of the UTS detour can be found here.
UTS riders should plan for a disruption of several months, according to a notice from Rebecca White, director of Parking and Transportation.
Unscheduled changes to service and other announcements affecting the UTS bus system are distributed via a subscription-based email alert system, UTS411.
