April 15, 2008 — The University of Virginia joins all Virginians in remembering those who lost their lives or were injured in the shootings at Virginia Tech a year ago.
To honor those who died, the survivors and their families, Virginia Gov. Timothy Kaine has ordered the flags of the Commonwealth to be flown at half-staff on April 16. He also has asked that all colleges and universities observe a moment of silence at noon, followed by the ringing of bells.
Here at U.Va., we will observe the moment of silence at noon, followed by 32 tolls of the Chapel bells. Later in the day, at 5:30 p.m., Student Council invites members of the University community to attend a vigil in the Amphitheatre in front of Garrett Hall.
