July 5, 2012 — Mews Alley, which runs between the Pavilion I and Pavilion III gardens on the west side of the University of Virginia's Academical Village, will be closed during the day from July 9 to July 17 to accommodate the installation of fire suppression systems in the Range and Lawn rooms.
The work requires trenching across the western end of the alley, which will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Steel plates will be placed over open excavations every evening.
Because of the historic nature of the buildings involved, all excavations within five feet of the structures will be dug by hand and archaeological monitoring will accompany all digs.
