The University of Virginia men’s golf team lifted a trophy Monday that had eluded the Cavaliers for more than seven decades.
So, you could excuse UVA coach Bowen Sargent for getting emotional when the dream officially became a reality: The Wahoos, for the first time in men’s golf program history, are Atlantic Coast Conference champions.
“When they handed the trophy to me,” Sargent said, “I had a little tear in my eye, I must admit.”

UVA began competing in the ACC championship tournament in 1954 and had finished as runners-up five times, including three times under Sargent (2010, 2012 and 2019). Monday’s breakthrough at The Club at Olde Stone course in Bowling Green, Kentucky, came after a thrilling match play victory over the University of North Carolina.

The Wahoos won three of five matches against the Tar Heels. Junior Bryan Lee birdied four of his last five holes to rally for UVA’s clinching point over UNC’s Maxwell Ford.
Lee’s heroics concluded the ACC’s five-day tournament. Virginia won the 54-hole stroke play competition before knocking off Georgia Tech, Clemson University and UNC in match play.
